It’s been a while. Around eight months! But I’ve been through a lot in these eight months. I struggled with death only five months ago. I won’t go into the details here, but suffice it to say that I survived my Black Swan and I’m here again.

And back on track. Out of pure randomness, I ran into PKD’s short story “The Adjustment Team” which was intriguing and interesting. The scenery was described quite artistically, and only some of the characters were properly described, such as the old man with ‘his faded blue eyes mild– a deep, ancient mildness that made the Clerk tremble even more’. I think this selective description was on purpose, to show relative importances in a social hierarchy.

The story is deeply philosophical since it deals with the very fabric of existence. On the surface, it seems farcical even, especially as he introduces some elements of politics as the underlying reason for the actions of the Adjustment Team. But really, it makes you think about reality, at the physical and psychological levels.

Especially the latter. Are we still the same people and yet not the same? PKD banks on this discovery and gives it an artistic veneer.

All in all, an entertaining story that reminds one of the Truman Show.
